WEEKLY FOCUS - Say No to Bullying Day
From the Principal - Building connections to stop bullying
Dear Families
A huge congratulations to both of our School Bands and our Bell Ensemble who competed in the Gladstone Eisteddfod last week. They gave strong performances and we are very proud of their efforts:
Star of the Sea Beginner Band - Highly Commended
Star of the Sea Intermediate Band - 2nd place
Star of the Sea Bell Ensemble - 1st Place
Many thanks to Kerrie Mallet and Renae Richards for their work with our students and to Miss Erin and Mrs Pacheco for being such great supporters and helpers.
“Friendship is based on the oldest and most intrinsic human awareness that there is more to life than just ourselves.”
― Christopher Hansard
As we celebrate National ‘Say No To Bullying Day’, it is timely to remind ourselves that strong connections and social skills are protective factors in the prevention of bullying and can assist in developing positive help-seeking behaviours.
Teachers and parents play an important role in building a connected community that models healthy relationships, creates opportunities for connection and assists children develop the skills they need to build safe and happy friendships.
At school we try to build opportunity for connection into each day so that children feel safe and supported and listened to. One of the most important things we can give our children is to let them know that we are interested in them and their concerns.
We often assume that making friends is just a natural part of growing up but there is a lot that determines how well children can form friendships:
• a child’s self-image;
• how well they communicate;
• whether they behave in a way that encourages friendship;
• whether they can recognise and use a range of social skills.
All around the world, successful friendship depends on the same, fundamental skills. To be successful, children must:
• regulate their own, negative emotions;
• understand other people’s emotions and perspectives;
• show sympathy, and offer help to friends in need;
• feel secure and trusting of other people;
• know how to handle introductions, and participate in conversation;
• be capable of cooperation, negotiation, and compromise;
• know how to apologise, and make amends; and
• be understanding (and forgiving) of other people’s mistakes.
We appreciate the opportunity to work with you in supporting the growth of these social and emotional skills.
Have a wonderful week everyone!
God bless you.

2023 School Goals
From Our APRE
‘My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit eshults in God my saviour;’ Luke 1:46
On the 15th August each year the Church celebrates the Feast Day of the Assumption of Our Lady when according to our faith, the Holy Mother, “having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory”.
We thank Father Ashwin who joined us for Mass yesterday. He encouraged us to think about some ways we can live like Mary did.
This week we join with other schools across our nation for the National day of action against Bullying. The NDA theme for 2023 is 'growing connections'. This theme supports research findings that strong school community connections and social skills are protective factors in the prevention of bullying and help enable positive, help-seeking behaviours in students.
On Friday students will gather in their Pastoral Care Groups to work together towards building connections and creating an environment where everyone feels safe.

SCIENCE WEEK
National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. This year’s theme is Innovation: Powering Future Industries. The week is dedicated to acknowledging the importance Science and Technology development has on our lives.
Here is a list of the content that is being explored in our classrooms here at SOS this term during our Science lessons.
- Living things have basic needs, including food and water.
- Seasonal changes in the environment and explore how these changes affect everyday life.
- Investigate the effects of mixing materials together and identify that materials can be changed or combined for a particular purpose.
- A change of state between solid and liquid can be caused by adding or removing heat and that heat can be produced in many ways and can move from one object to another.
- Identify sources of water and describe key processes in the water cycle, including movement of water through the sky, landscape and ocean; precipitation; evaporation; and condensation.
- Develop an understanding of the properties of natural and processed materials and how these influence their use. Explore the property of elasticity in greater depth.
- Understand that light from a source forms shadows and can be absorbed, reflected and refracted.
- Investigate electrical circuits as a means of transferring and transforming electricity. They will design and construct electrical circuits to make observations, develop explanations and perform specific tasks, using materials and equipment safely.
Have a great week.

If you completed a paper copy of the enrolment form, you will definitely need to update these media consent details please. Parents who completed an online application are also asked to check their child's current media permissions to ensure it is correct.
This is a very quick task completed through Parent Lounge and below are some instructions to guide you with this task. You will need to complete this task for each child you have at Star of the Sea please.
