Weekly Focus - Catholic Education Week
From the Principal -Spirit of Catholic Education
Dear Families
Happy Catholic Education Week everyone. It is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate all that is great about our Catholic Schools. It is a chance to reflect on the inclusive, compassionate, and hopeful nature of our schools and the strong communities they foster. It is an opportunity to celebrate the fundamental virtues of faith, hope and love that we seek to cultivate and share.
This week’s video message is produced by the Qld Catholic Education Commission and includes a message from Carmel Nash from Catholic School Parents Qld. Carmel urges everyone to get involved this week and whenever you can throughout the year. We started this week with a fun sausage sizzle and look forward to our Crazy Hair/Free Dress Day on Wednesday and our Grandparents Mass and celebration on Thursday. We would love to see you if you can make it.
"Faith goes up the stairs that love has built and looks out the windows which hope has opened." - Charles Spurgeon
“I wish you all — parents, teachers, people who work in the schools, students — a beautiful journey at school, a journey that enables you to learn three languages that a mature person should know how to express: the language of the mind, the language of the heart and the language of the hands. Harmoniously though, that is, to think what you feel and what you do; to feel deeply what you think and what you do; and to do well what you think and what you feel.” – Pope Francis
Our Grandparents Mass on Thursday is one of the highlights of our Catholic Education Week celebrations and will be the perfect opportunity to acknowledge our 2023 Catholic Education Week nominees who have all made significant contributions to Catholic Education here at Star of the Sea. We introduce them in this week’s newsletter: Kellie Richardson, Brenda Emerick, Kylie Best and Natalie Braddon. Make sure you say a special congratulations if you see them around the school. We are grateful for all these people bring to our Star of the Sea family and thank them for letting their lights shine so brightly.
Have a wonderful week everyone!
God bless you.

Congratulations to our Spirit of Catholic Education Nominees
Kellie Richardson
Kellie has been a part of Catholic Education in the Diocese of Rockhampton for the past 30 years, demonstrating her deep faith and her passion for educating children along every step of the journey. She works very hard to help all children feel supported, included and capable. She will never walk past a need without taking action and has led many initiatives to assist others. She is the unseen, quiet worker at the centre of many improvement projects around the school, doing all she can to make it a safe and happy place to learn and grow. Her creativity, care for the environment, belief in the dignity of all and passion for building connection have greatly benefited our school. We have been especially blessed by Kellie’s faith, humour, wisdom and her strong belief in the beauty of people and our world.
Brenda Emerick
Brenda is a much loved teacher who has been a part of Catholic Education for the past 20 years. She has touched the lives of many grateful students, caring deeply about their safety and their growth as individuals. She readily participates in various school events and responsibilities and her wisdom and care is a gift to the parents, staff and students she supports. Brenda takes special care of our early years teachers and anyone who most needs her help. Her Catholic faith is an obvious strength and guiding force in her life which gives example and support to those she works with and the wider Parish community.
Kylie Best
Kylie Best has been part of the Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School community for the past 17 years. She has been an integral part of our school’s Outside Care Service, often taking on leadership roles at various times throughout the years as needed, and mentoring and supporting new staff as they build their skills. She is particularly appreciated for the way she gets to know each member of our Outside Hours Care community and works hard to make the service a home away from home for the children in her care. Kylie’s practical, friendly and humour filled approach is appreciated by those who work with her and she demonstrates a deep love of the school’s community as both a staff member and a parent.
Natalie Braddon
Natalie has been a valued member of the Star of the Sea Parent community since 2019. She is passionate about building community and helping all parents to feel like they have a place at Star of the Sea. She recognizes the importance of parent engagement and supporting parents in their role as the first educators of their children. She is always looking for ways for us to meet and help each other and has worked hard to support both our School Board and P&F Association. Her authenticity, humour and generous hospitality are a well appreciated gift to Star of the Sea.

From Our APRE
Welcome to Catholic Education Week
This week we join with schools all over Queensland to celebrate the unique community we have within our Catholic School. We are a community of Faith, Hope and Love.
Celebrated annually in Week 3 of Term 3, Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for all Catholic schools in Queensland to celebrate and promote their distinctive mission and ethos.
Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our school and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.

Defining Features
The defining features communicate clearly what we believe is at the heart of Catholic education and give direction and guidance to those whose daily interactions with others bring to life the vision of an authentic Catholic school as living out the Gospel message.
Catholic schools have a special and vital role in the Church’s mission in education; through providing a learning environment that is spiritually nurturing, intellectually challenging and emotionally caring. Catholic school communities will continue to provide support to lifelong learners so that they will be able and willing to envision and contribute to the creation of a just, equitable and compassionate world.
