Weekly Focus -For Our Elders
From the Principal -Getting prepared for transitions
Dear Families
Welcome back to Term 3 everyone.
We are looking forward to another great term full of growth and learning.
One of our big focuses for this term is on transitions. Transitions take us from one place or activity to another and play an important part in setting our children up for success.
I spoke to the children today about how organisation can help them transition well into their school day. I told them that it is a good idea to listen to their parents who are helping them get their clothes and materials ready for school the night before, to wake up on time and not feel panicked about the day ahead.
I also mentioned that this is the time to do a check that their names are on their hats and jumpers which can often cause stress when they get lost.
Whatever we can do to help them feel calm and ready to learn at the start of the day will be of great benefit to them in the classroom. We are also working on helping them transition smoothly back to home at the end of the day. Please do not hesitate to talk to your child’s teacher or any of us for support with transitions if needed.
“The most important things my Elders have given me are my culture, our traditions, our history and my identity today...
Elders are there to guide us and make sure the culture doesn't die – that who we are as people does not die. Because we can't forget, and should never forget, where we come from and how we got here.”
― Liz Lewry from ‘Life Without Barriers’
We celebrated NAIDOC Week last week and the theme was “FOR OUR ELDERS”. I have long believed in the importance of story and helping our children grow and value their own story as a way of building connection and self-worth. Our indigenous brothers and sisters show us the important role our elders can play in building and handing on this story.
If you get the chance this week, I encourage you to have a look at this week’s newsletter video. It features some beautiful reflections from young people about their answers to these questions:
What do you learn from your elders?
Why do you love your elders?
How do your elders encourage you?
I found myself thinking about the significant elders in my own life and also wondering what sort of an elder I am being for others.
I look forward to celebrating the gift of our elders at our Grandparents Mass on Thursday 27th July. Please join us if you can.
Good luck to our Challenge Cup Netball and Rugby League Teams who head to Yeppoon to compete against other Catholic Primary Schools in the Diocese this week.
Have a wonderful week everyone!
God bless you.

2023 School Goals
From Our APRE
Welcome back – I do hope you all had some time to rest and recharge over the holidays.
We begin the term with a very long list of things that are happening already. Term 3 is an exciting term with our first big event having taken place today – a visit from Tim Horan and 2 current Rugby Reds players (Renae and Lawson).
These players took time to share some important messages with our students, one of them was the importance of listening to our parents/carers and the other was about playing fair and being a good sport even when we lose the game.
In Week 3 we will celebrate Catholic Education Week – a time to remember all the great things about our school system.
How lucky we are to belong to this wonderful Star of the Sea Catholic community.
Go out and help your neighbour,

In Our Prayers
Let us pray...
• We pray for Indigenous Elders, in gratitude for their wisdom and care for country. May we learn from their wisdom, working towards a sustainable future where the land is nurtured, respected and shared by all.
• We pray that we may listen compassionately to the hurt and pain of our indigenous brothers and sisters so that we may achieve peace, justice and reconciliation amongst all people.
• We pray for all those who have died: May God grant them the peace and joy and hope of the resurrection.
• We pray for those members of our school community who are battling sickness and suffering in their life: May they find healing and comfort.

Dear Parents
We are asking your assistance in updating media consent for your child/ren.
Our system has been updated with more options that give us clarity with the myriad different ways your child's details can possibly be used. If you completed a paper copy of the enrolment form, you will definitely need to update these media consent details please. Parents who completed an online application are also asked to check their child's current media permissions to ensure it is correct.
This is a very quick task completed through Parent Lounge and below are some instructions to guide you with this task. You will need to complete this task for each child you have at Star of the Sea please.
We appreciate your help in ensuring we have the correct information for your child/ren.
